The
vertical headjoint is not 90 degrees; is has a playing angle of 86 degrees.
This is to done reduce extreme pronation of the right wrist.
The
traditional contact point with the left index finger is lost, and an extra
left hand support may be neccesary. (Supplied with the headjoint). Together
with the thumb rest this provides both stability and weight distribution.
The Flutelab left hand support is cushioned for comfort and has adjustable
height. It simply clicks onto your flute.
Embouchure
effect
As a result of the different way of handling the flute, it is not easy to
press the flute to your lips, so playing with the Vertical flute requires
a very light embouchure.
You can turn the embouchure part for the optimal blowing angle.
Right thumb
A large proportion of the weight of the instrument is now handled by the
right thumb. This may be uncomfortable.
To resolve this problem, we include a very large, very comfortable thumb
rest.
Acoustical effects
Some of the turbulance near the embouchure is reflected by the tight bend.
Everything has been done to minimize this effect, but it cannot be avoided
completely. As a result, the Vertical headjoint has a higher noise component
in its tone. Nonetheless, it sounds rather good with a full, warm tone.
An unusual sensation is to hear the flute equally well with both ears, as
the flute is now centrally held.
The Vertical flute headjoint is entirely handcrafted from sterling silver.
As they are made to order only, there is always a waiting time.
Do
not let physical problems get between you and your flute. Even with severe
movement limitations you can play on a vertical flute. A vertical flute is
your own flute combined with a Flutelab Vertcal headjoint.
